Mesothelioma Specialty Centers: A Verified Directory (2026)

Every program below was checked by hand on August 5, 2026 on the hospital’s own website. A center is listed only when the hospital itself names a mesothelioma program, a mesothelioma specialty group, or a peritoneal HIPEC program.

The one thing most lists get wrong

Many “best hospitals for mesothelioma” lists are really lists of NCI-designated cancer centers. That designation is a research credential from the National Cancer Institute. It is a genuine mark of quality — but it does not tell you whether that hospital has anyone who treats mesothelioma regularly. There are more than 70 NCI-designated centers. Far fewer run a named mesothelioma program.

So this directory asks a narrower question: does this hospital say, in its own words, that it has a mesothelioma program?

Pleural or peritoneal decides which surgeon you need

This is the detail that costs families the most time. Mesothelioma in the lining of the chest (pleural) is treated by thoracic surgeons. Mesothelioma in the lining of the abdomen (peritoneal) is treated by surgical oncologists who perform cytoreductive surgery with heated chemotherapy, called HIPEC. They are different specialists in different departments — sometimes at different hospitals.

What to ask when you call any of them

• How many people with mesothelioma does this program see in a year?
• Who would lead my family member’s care, and what is their experience with this diagnosis?
• Do you offer a second-opinion review of outside pathology and scans?
• Are there clinical trials open here right now for this type and stage?
• How soon could we be seen, and what records do you need first?

Centers treating both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma

These programs see both forms, which can matter if the diagnosis is still being confirmed.

• MSK states it treats one of the nation’s largest volumes of mesothelioma patients.
• Treats both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma.
• A multidisciplinary team meets twice monthly to set treatment strategy for individual patients.

Rochester, MN

• Treats: Both pleural (chest) and peritoneal (abdomen)
• A named mesothelioma specialty group, explicitly covering both pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma.
• Multidisciplinary care including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.
• Mayo Clinic also has campuses in Arizona and Florida.

Cleveland Clinic — Mesothelioma treatment program

Cleveland, OH

• Treats: Both pleural (chest) and peritoneal (abdomen)
• One of a small number of U.S. programs offering comprehensive mesothelioma treatment.
• Was among the first U.S. programs to use HIPEC (heated chemotherapy) for mesothelioma affecting the abdominal lining.
• Multidisciplinary team spanning pulmonology, medical oncology, thoracic surgery and radiation oncology.

Los Angeles / Duarte, CA

• Treats: Both pleural (chest) and peritoneal (abdomen)
• A named mesothelioma clinical program, plus a separate peritoneal surface malignancies service.
• Offers minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery, intrapleural as well as systemic chemotherapy, targeted therapy and tumor treating fields.
• Runs mesothelioma clinical trials in immunotherapy and targeted therapy.

Centers with a pleural (chest) mesothelioma program

Pleural mesothelioma is the more common form. These programs are built around thoracic — chest — surgery and care.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital — International Mesothelioma Program (IMP)

Boston, MA

• Treats: Pleural mesothelioma (chest lining)
• Founded in 2002; the hospital describes it as the largest program of its kind in the world.
• A joint effort across Brigham and Women’s, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Boston VA Health Care System and the Harvard School of Public Health.
• Care spans surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, rehabilitation, post-acute care and supportive services, with a dedicated multidisciplinary team.

• Assigns dedicated social workers, a mesothelioma advanced-practice provider and a program coordinator who help with scheduling and transportation.

• Treats: Pleural mesothelioma (chest lining)
• A named mesothelioma research and treatment center with a team focused on mesothelioma.

• States it is the only cancer center offering transarterial chemoperfusion to mesothelioma patients.

• He came to Central Florida from Boston, where he was a thoracic surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a Lecturer in Surgery at Harvard Medical School.
• Practices in Orlando and Altamonte Springs; accepts new patients and offers video visits.

Centers with a peritoneal (abdominal) HIPEC program

Peritoneal mesothelioma is treated by surgical oncologists who perform cytoreductive surgery with HIPEC, not by chest surgeons. If the diagnosis is peritoneal, this is the list that matters.

• The center has performed more than 1,100 HIPEC procedures — one of the most experienced teams worldwide.
• Dr. Edward A. Levine, chief of surgical oncology, is a recognized national leader in HIPEC.

What we left out, and why

Leaving things out honestly is part of what makes a directory useful:

• Miracle Flights — Free flights, but only for patients aged 0–17. Mesothelioma is overwhelmingly diagnosed in older adults, so it does not apply to almost any mesothelioma family. Listed here so nobody wastes a phone call.
• Patient AirLift Services (PALS) — Could not be verified on 2026-08-05 — the organization’s website refused automated checks. Not listed rather than listed unverified.
